Five Mistakes Made by PR Students Past and Present

We’re all human; mistakes are inevitable within every walk of life. Being a second year public relations student I’ve certainly made and witnessed a few! Here are my five mistakes made my PR students past and present...

5. Neglecting resources provided by university

The support/opportunities available at University certainly surpass any that will be provided outside its four walls – guest lectures from industry leaders, placement opportunities and writing competitions are only a few of the resources that spring to mind. Make sure you utilise these tools as this will aid your chances of employment come graduation.

4. Writing, what’s that?

A job in public relations will always involve a ton of writing. The average job description will demand its applicant has exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Take every opportunity to improve your writing skills, write blogs; write press releases; write; write and erm, – write! The only way to improve is by putting the hard graft in now; that way you’ll feel totally equipped when assigned your first press release or post on the company’s blog.

3. Baring all on social media

We’ve all done it; posted inappropriate things online. Wondering what ever possessed us to use our favourite expletives whilst explaining how much we love our best mates on Facebook/Twitter etc. Unfortunately for us, employers are now, more than ever, checking us up online scrutinising our every move. It is important we try to promote ourselves in the best way possible way, after all it is PR! So if you’re off out on the razz, log yourself out and go incognito.

2. News?

Having an awareness of global events will always serve you well. The best PR campaigns/stunts can be devised on whatever is currently news worthy. It will never hurt to be up-to-date; especially if you find an inappropriate story about a client and the need of crisis management becomes apparent.

1. Placement Evasion

The flexibility of the degree provides all students with the chance to gain valuable experience. Weekly emails with placement opportunities are almost always provided leaving no excuse for students not gaining valuable experience on their days off. After all that is what sets apart this degree from the rest!
